'Province Level Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Conference’ conducted in Karnali.

In a significant step towards fostering collaboration and addressing challenges faced by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Karnali Province, the NGO Federation of Nepal organized a comprehensive workshop on December 15, 2023, at the District Development Committee (DDC) hall in Surkhet. The conference provided a platform for more than 100 CSOs, International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs), and local government representatives to voice their concerns, identify challenges, and explore opportunities for improved collaboration with the federal government and donor agencies. The event was marked by lively discussions and insightful deliberations. The Chief Minister of Karnali Province, Mr. Raj Kumar Sharma, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his address, Chief Minister Sharma emphasized the vital role CSOs play as ‘watchdogs’ in overseeing both government and private sector interventions. He called for the establishment of functional collaboration mechanisms among local government, CSOs, and donor agencies to enhance the overall development of the province. Addressing the concerns raised by CSOs, Chief Minister Sharma pledged the provincial government's commitment to resolving issues related to CSO registration, taxation, coordination, and collaboration with government units. He acknowledged the need for a streamlined process to facilitate the seamless functioning of CSOs within the province. Mr. Ram Prasad Subedi, President of the NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN), echoed Chief Minister Sharma's sentiments. Mr. Subedi emphasized NFN's unwavering support for CSOs and pledged to lead initiatives aimed at resolving the challenges faced by these organizations. He outlined NFN's role in bridging the gap between CSOs and government collaboration, as well as facilitating their interaction with donor agencies. The workshop identified several common issues faced by CSOs, including challenges related to CSO registration, taxation, donor coordination, NFN support areas, restrictions imposed by local governments on working areas, and fees collected by local governments. Some CSOs also highlighted issues related to funding proposals submitted to donor agencies. The Province Level Conference in Surkhet served as a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration, setting the stage for improved coordination between CSOs, local government, and donor agencies. With the commitments made by Chief Minister Sharma and NFN President Subedi, there is a renewed sense of optimism for a strengthened partnership that will contribute to the overall development of Karnali Province.
